Let Talk About The Perfect Couple
This post will be filled with spoilers so only read on if you have watched it.
So last week I watched Netflix's new drama and what happened to be Nicole Kidman's latest role, The Perfect Couple. It promised to be a drama filled with murder, mystery and suspense, so I thought, sure why not. This sounds like my cup of tea.
But instead, while I did get all three - murder, mystery and suspense. It left me yelling at my TV afterwards thinking, what the hell!
The synopsis is about a wedding taking place at a rich family beach island home, and the night before a dead body was discovered in the water and it ended up being the bride's best friend who was found dead lying in the water.
What follows is episodes where the family drama unravels like a loose thread on a dress. Every episode focuses on two cops who must find the murderer and discover secret family drama in the process - secrets that the family want no one to know.
Every secret that gets discovered and every plot device has me yelling at the TV.
For example (and this is a spoiler so do only read on if you have seen the show), it turns out Amelia was cheating on her fiancee with his best friend (of course), the fiancee's brother was also cheating and so was the dad. It ended up being a whole happy family of cheater - lovely. The dad was cheating on his wife with Amelia's best friend and the only family member not cheating is the brother of Amelia's husband-to-be. Are you keeping up?
There is a subplot where this family is very rich and the younger brother, Will who will turn 18 the next month will get the family trust money. This doesn’t stop Geer (Nicole Kidman's character) from mysteriously asking for a loan from a family helper (who also happened to be very rich himself) to help pay a debt to a mysterious shady character.
There is a lot to digest with this show/drama and a lot of it will be filled with spoilers as I got to the end and it was just overall disappointing. I got to the title and found myself rushing to Reddit to find out if anyone else was confused - good thing I found I wasn’t along.
So here is what I will do, I will put all my thoughts into these bullet points and you are free to comment down below if I missed/misunderstood anything or if you also, felt confused.
Geer shocking confession she used to be an escort, as she was always presented as just some kind of famous writer and married to some rich guy. Where did that come from? So, she used to be an escort and is now a famous writer who can get into People's magazine. That didn’t make sense and I felt that needed to explore more.
Why did Geer at the very end decide to hunt down Amelia and give her the manuscript of her latest book, and why does she need her blessing. What was that about?
Did Geer eventually leave her cheating husband?
Did Will ever get with Chloe?
Where did all this family money come from?
Who was this French lady?
There was a subplot of Amelia's parents coming down for the wedding, and the mum had cancer. The mum has these pills that ended up being in the stomach of the murder victims. How, and why? That was never explained.
Let's talk about Abby, the groom's pregnant sister-in-law. Who was revealed to be the murderer? The motive was never made clear and the fact that she was revealed to be the killer in the last 10 minutes of the show.
The story is that Amelia's best friend (who ended up dead) was having an affair with the groom's dad and ended up pregnant. The affair itself was never fully explored - nor really explained.
How would Abby know about the affair and the unexpected pregnancy?
And why would it give Abby the motive to kill Amelia’s best friend?
Did Amelia's best friend really believe everyone will live happily ever after?
The murder itself was so rushed and unexpected, that nothing was leading up to it.
What happened to Abby in the end when she was arrested?
Why the weird subplot of the mysterious maid who disappeared in the night, it has nothing to do with the story.
Was anyone faithful in this family?
Everyone keeps talking about Nicole Kidman's hair - I was too busy looking at her Botox.
That is all I can think of at the moment, let me know if you have anything to add. What were your thoughts on Netflix’s The Perfect Couple and additionally, have you read the book?
